Pradyumna Vyas Director's Message

Dear friends,

It is with lots of humility and honour that I have taken up the responsibility of heading the National Institute of Design (NID) as its director. A highly esteemed institution, NID has attained both national and international acclaim in the last few years. The time has come to consolidate all the new initiatives that were taken to strengthen NID as a multidisciplinary institution. NID has transformed into a multi-campus Institute that offers sixteen postgraduate programmes, and it has also witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of students enrolling in various design disciplines. My directorial responsibilities will primarily focus upon:

• Providing quality education and strengthening NID’s leadership in the field of design through knowledge and research based programmes.
• Addressing the need to foster a culture of responsible and value centric design education that is rooted in the traditional and cultural ethos of India.
• Transforming NID into a versatile institution which nurtures the philosophy of multi-dimensional learning.
• Retaining and attracting quality faculty, academicians, designers, researchers and professionals.
• Introducing focused training initiatives for the design faculty through Faculty Development Programmes. This will cater to India’s growing need for skilled design educators.
• Strengthening the Institute’s relations with internationally acclaimed design institutes, in order to acquire a global perspective on design.
• Developing educational programmes which have wider social implications and technological excellence.
• Investing in intellectual property for the generation of knowledge capital.
• Strengthening NID’s interaction with institutions dealing with diverse disciplines such as technology, management, humanities and social sciences, and thereby fostering a fruitful exchange of knowledge and ideas.
• Focusing on emerging domains of global concerns.
• Reviewing the curriculum to make design education more contextual.

Celebrating NID’s Golden Jubilee

We are indeed privileged to be witnessing the Golden Jubilee year of NID from November 3, 2010. The celebrations to mark this occasion would commence from November 2010 and continue till November 2011.

This would be an excellent opportunity to reflect on fifty years of NID’s contribution towards India’s development through the Institute’s forays into design education, research and training. This would be an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the importance of design and design-oriented professions. It would be the most fitting moment to connect with all those who were associated with NID and honour the visionaries who played a significant role in transforming NID into a premier design institute. The celebrations would also see the Institute conducting a series of seminars, conferences, workshops, competitions and design exhibitions across the country and overseas as well.
