Krishna Patel

Krishna Amin-Patel is a graduate of NID and has spent about four decades as a design educator at NID; she has also taught at other design institutes in the USA. She has been a visiting faculty at NID from 1977–1980. From 1981–1997, she was a full time faculty at NID. During this time, Krishna taught basic and advanced courses in both Textile Design and Apparel Design, and actively contributed to curriculum development of both disciplines in capacity of coordinator and faculty. During her tenure at NID, she initiated collaboration with the International Wool Secretariat—the outcome of which was a course in Knitwear Design. She also introduced courses in the area of children’s wear, men’s wear and work wear. Krishna was an important part of the Jawaja project that NID undertook in the 1970s. Weaving being her area of interest, she initiated structure and material based research at NID.

Krishna co-authored a comprehensive tome called Fibre and Loom: The Indian Tradition with historian Dr. Lotika Varadarajan. As Consultant and Curriculum Development Coordinator at Kalaraksha Vidyalaya, Kutch; she continues as visiting faculty at the institute. In 2002, she did her MFA from Arizona State University (ASU), USA. Her work was published in Fiberarts Design Book 7 in 2004. Krishna re-joined NID as a faculty in November 2011. She has had the privilege of exhibiting her own work at several platforms within the country and overseas. She has also taught as visiting faculty at ASU, Penland School of Crafts and Rhode Island School of Design in USA.

She is currently the Dean of the PG Campus, Gandhinagar, continuing teaching in the Post-graduate education programme in Apparel, Textile, Lifestyle and Accessory Design. Under Outreach activities for African countries, Ghana basketry project headed by her successfully concluded at Accra, Ghana. She is the State Head for Tripura State for the research project of Documenting and Study of the Textile Traditions of the North-East. She headed the setting up of the Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID), launched in 2015.
