Significant Achievements (2000-2007)

  • Financial turnaround of NID through enhanced government support, institutional funding, strengthening consultancy activities, outreach project programmes and corporate contributions etc.
  • Introducing 15 postgraduate programmes at NID since 2001 onwards including 8 migrated programmes and 7 new programmes in emergent areas of design like New Media, Toy Design & Development, Graphic Design, Software User Interface Design, Information & Digital Design, Transportation and Automobile Design, Strategic Design Management.
  • Initiating attitudinal change in people for being performance and output / outcome driven.
  • Initiating a Technology-Design fusion initiative with the help of Dept. Science & Technology, Government of India and setting up for the first time a National Design Business Incubator (NDBI), in NID Campus.
  • Creating a new research Division at NID and placing emphasis on Research-led education to increase the capability of designers to come out with breakthrough innovations with focus on IPR creation and instituting 3 major industry Sponsored Research Chairs since 2004.
  • Commencing an on-line experimental design education programme (probably first time in the world) in collaboration with MacMillan India, Bangalore.
  • Commencing an Industry Programme & Projects division to train working Executives / Design Professionals.
  • Joining hands with Grass Roots Innovators Network (GIAN) to commence a Grassroot Innovators Studio (GRIDS) for converting grassroot innovations to marketable products as a developmental initiative.
  • Collaborative Design Centre (Show Case Design) with India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) to display good design examples to inspire the Indian industry and young designers. (2002)
  • Establishing alliance with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to hold Design Summits annually since 2001 and work towards creating a design movement in the country and with the Businessworld to hold Design Excellence Awards from 2003 onwards.
  • Active support to projects in Handlooms, Handicrafts, Khadi, Coir, Bamboo, and other traditional industries in the country and expanding the role and scope of Outreach Programmes including setting up an International Centre for Indian Crafts with the help of DC (H)
  • Setting up India’s first R&D Campus of NID in Bangalore as a collaborative project between DIPP&DIT (Govt. of India).
  • Conceiving the Master Plan of PG Campus at an overall outlay of Rs.20 crores in Gandhinagar and obtaining 15 acres of land gratis from Govt. of Gujarat and taking up Phase I construction.
  • Suggesting Policy Road Map for Indian design in the CII-NID Design Summit in December 2001.
  • Preparing Draft National Design Policy for Government of India (Since approved on February 2007).
  • Establishing Exchange Programmes through MOUs with 25 best-in-class institutions in the world.
  • Active partnership and activating with International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) / International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA) and other World bodies of design and ED serving on the ICSID Board from 2001-2003 and now from 2005-2007.
  • Mooting the idea of a network of Indian Design Institutes and holding a meeting, a major Indian Design Institutes at NID giving shape to Indian Design Institutes’ Alliance (IDIA).
  • Conceiving and setting up of the “NIDUS” NID’s own retail store with the help of faculty, students and staff in January 2005.
  • Commencing a National Design Aptitude Test (NDAT).
  • Commencing faculty development center at NID from June 2007.
  • Moving for university status for NID under section 3 of UGC Act and as per NDP 2007.
