| Profile of Dr Darlie O Koshy |
- Dr Darlie O Koshy, is the Director (Principal Academic & Admn. Officer) and Ex-officio Member of the Governing Council of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad since 12th June 2000. Dr Koshy has spearheaded the transformation of NID over the last 7 years by leading a team of 60 faculty, 200 staff and over 800 students in 3 campuses located in Ahmedabad, (Main campus in the Commercial Capital of Gujarat) Gandhinagar (Capital city of Gujarat) & Bengaluru (Capital of Karnataka). The transformation has been achieved through upgradation and modernization of design support infrastructure including setting up of Knowledge Management Centre, Design Vision Centre, introduction of 15 Research-led PG Programmes in diverse design domains, educational systems like System for Educational Excellence in Design (SEED), Credit Evaluation System etc., financial restructuring, initiating and setting up of R & D Campus of NID in Bengaluru and conceiving and developing a PG Campus in Gandhinagar. Dr Koshy has been driving in the recent years design promotion in the country including initiation of CII-NID Design Summits, BW-NID Design Excellence Awards, ITPO-NID Design Centre and several other national level initiatives. Recognizing the contribution of Dr. Koshy over the 1st term of 5 years (2000-2005) the Govt. of India and the Governing Council of NID have appointed Dr. Koshy for a further term of 5 years.
- Since 2001, Dr Koshy has been actively involved in research on Design Policy and allied areas and from 2004 has been spearheading the drafting of the National Design Policy which has been approved by the Cabinet of Government of India on the 8th February 2007. Dr Koshy is now leading the rollout and implementation of the policy as the Member Secretary of the Implementation Committee constituted by the Government of India.
- Dr Koshy had started his career on 7th August 1977 in the Textile / Handloom sector.
Dr Koshy was the Managing Director of Kerala State Handloom Corporation and Chairman of Kerala Garments Ltd. during 1986-87 and founding General Manager of National Handloom Development Corporation, Lucknow during 1984-86. Later, he was the founding faculty member at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi and had contributed enormously in its formative years from 1987 until 2000 and for setting up its campuses in Bangalore, Chennai & Hyderabad.
- Dr Koshy took his Ph.D. in Management from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. He is also a rank holder in MBA with specialization in International Marketing. He had attended advanced training for one year during 1987-88 in Fashion Management at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, USA
- Dr Koshy is currently Executive Board Member of ICSID the world apex body for Design, based in Montreal, Canada for the 2005-07 term and had served earlier on board for the 2001-2003 term as well. He has also served during (2003-2007) as a Member of the CII-National Committee on IPR, R&D, Technology & Innovation and is on several Boards of leading commercial, educational, research organizations in India.
- Dr Koshy is an author of 2 books on International Marketing, 2 monographs and about 100 papers and has made over 200 presentations, in India and overseas. His expertise domains of expertise include Fashion Marketing, Design Management, Strategic Design and Design Policy matters.
- Dr Koshy’s contribution to design education and promotion has been recently recognized by being named as one of “50 leaders reshaping Indian education” by Education World (Nov. 2006), the human development magazine and has also been felicitated with the B M Das Memorial Citation in 2006 by CLRI, Chennai for his contribution “to the generation and development of knowledge as an applied researcher”.
