NID undertook this documentation of Bamboo and Cane Crafts of India's northeastern states, a region with rich craft traditions. The largely self-sufficient communities living in the area demonstrate, in no small measure, unique skills, and a strong sense of aesthetics. This is reflected in the very wide range of products devised by them from the abundant bamboo and cane resources of their home states. The study was carried out at the request of the Office of the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, Government of India. It was felt that a thorough knowledge of materials, skills and techniques would be of great help to designers, design students and others in determining how these communities can utilise available resources better, improve their standards of living and reach new markets. The book suggests that product innovation and diversification are ways of doing this. Scanned and reprinted in new size in 2004.
