NID's Outreach Programmes bring the Institute's experience and training facilities to the service of those outside its regular education and client service activities.

These Programmes help build a network of design collaboration toward economic and social priorities, between the Institute and organisation, groups and individuals all over India. These networks help extend design application in many areas still new to design.

NID's efforts are enriched by the experience of its Outreach collaborators which range from industrial bodies (particularly small, medium and hand industries) and other institutions of education and training, to voluntary organisation and central or state bodies working in priority sectors.

Workshop and training programmes are tailored to the specific needs of particular groups, aimed at assisting them to put design awareness in schools, at primary and secondary levels.

Among the ongoing outreach programmes a few are listed below:

1. Strategic Design Intervention for the Development of the Handloom Weavers in the State of Tamil Nadu for Commissioner of Handlooms & Textiles, Government of Tamil Nadu.
   1. Design & Technology Development Training workshops for Leather Development for Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, New Delhi  and Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai.
   2. Preparation of Detail Project Report for setting up a Jharkhand Handicrafts resource-cum-Research Development Institute at Ranchi for Department of Industries, Govt. of Jharkhand.
   3. Implementation of Handloom Export Scheme Design Innovation & Product Diversification for Sree Bhagwathy Handloom Weaver’s Society Ltd, Kerala and Sree Vellayani Handloom Weaver’s Society Ltd, Kerala.
   4. Development of innovative range of Furniture’s in Living Room, Kitchen, Bed Room and Office Furniture out of Coir for the Coir Board of India, Bangalore
