Knowledge Management Centre

The Knowledge Management Center, the new age format of an integrated approach to managing library, research centre, digital services all in a seamlessly integrated manner envisaging a central role in the educational activities at NID. This Center has a focused collection of books, audiovisual materials on design and its related fields. Apart from this the Center has the student diploma projects, craft documentations and other professional project reports. The KMC has also been attached to it showcases with design prototype and other collection. This strength of all resources at the KMC is aimed at giving the Centre the power to provide services under one roof with online facilities to students, faculty, researchers, institutions, corporate bodies and industry. 

The main focus of the KMC would be to harness the intellectual property at NID. At the KMC the focus will be to expand the intellectual property base through promoting processes of sharing knowledge, brainstorming sessions, exchange of ideas and experience, specialized training to faculty/staff and students how effectively they could make use of the KMC through the Intranet & Internet facilities to achieve efficiency at all levels. Strengthening the Intranet and Internet facilities would be another major task the KMC would be handling, as these are two vital areas through which the Information Technology can cater to the needs of knowledge sharing among students, faculty and outside world.

Books and other print resource
NID's KMC has a wide range of collection of books in its resources on design, science and technology, art & architecture, paintings, history, humanities, etc. Presently the collection has approximately 33,035 books. The periodical section has nearly 150 current journals with 5,000 back volumes mostly on design-related subjects. The rare and out of print collection includes books on art, architecture, paintings, history, etc. some of them are decades old!

Document Collection
The document collection contains nearly 1053 student Diploma Projects, 409 Craft documentation's and more than 810 project reports which NID had undertaken during the past 4 decades, which are unique with innovative themes and research oriented studies. Access to these documents is restricted. However, with prior notification and authorization from the concerned discipline Chairman/Coordinator access to this section will be permitted.

Audio Visual Resources
The unique collection of audiovisual materials, which includes films, (Audio Cassettes, Audio LP's, Audio Tapes, Audio CD, CD ROM Databases, Digital Audio Tapes (DAT), Films (16mm & 35 mm), Filmstrips, Microfilms & microfiche, Slides (Transparencies), Video Cassettes (U-matic, VHS, Betamax, Betacam), Video CD and DVD) contains NID's own works as well as the ones collected from externally. These are mostly on the topics of design, film classics, and of course NID's own experimental and animation films. The Audio Collection contains hundreds of hours of music, both Indian as well as Western & Indian classical, Folk, Jazz, Pop, etc. This collection also includes recordings of lectures and speeches held at NID, literature readings as well as sound effects, which are very important resources for both students and faculty in their day-to-day projects and classroom works. The visual collection consisting of nearly 90,428 transparencies from the early 60's till date are unique in the area of Indian landscape, art, architecture and design, along with topics like fairs & festivals, people, traditions, culture, etc.

Design Classics Collection
In addition to its traditional resources, the Centre harbors a rare collection of about 678 design classics from the Museum of Modern Art, New York which consists the works of eminent designers such as Charles Eames, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Alto, and several other great designers of the 20th century. This collection has been frequently used by the students and faculty as part of the analytical study of products. The collection is part of the permanent display at the Institute.

Physical Layout
The Knowledge Management Centre is situated in a centrally located area on the first floor next to the Information Technology Centre. The KMC is spread over an area of approximately 6500 square feet with full carpeting and air-conditioning. It has a reading room which can house approximately 150 readers at a time with special research, and preview areas with an internal networking to access the NID Intranet and Internet facilities. The books and periodicals are stacked on aesthetically designed racking systems. The Archival Documents, Rare Books, Project Reports, Drawings, Maps, etc. are stored in a compactor for greater protection and security.
