‘And Its Too Late’ is an interactive film. A fiction film, it has certain plot points where the viewer can make decisions on behalf of the characters, thereby controlling the direction of the narrative. The structure gives the user a participatory role in the film viewing experience.
Since its early days, the field of interactive digital media has been driven by technological innovation. Until now, this has hardly been balanced by appropriate innovation in terms of content. This is especially true when considering fictional content. In the digital medium, computer-mediated interactivity provides opportunities for combining traditional cinematic techniques with various software technologies. In this film, the viewer takes some decisions on behalf of the character. These decisions have a vital role to play in the narrative structure. Not only can the viewer put himself in the characters shoes, and relate to a character, but can decide actions the character will essay in certain situations as well.
The entire process involved a great deal of writing, shooting, and of course, editing. Naturally then, I had to don many hats—of screenwriter, actor, producer, sound designer, editor, and director.
It is not the first time a New Media student has shown an inclination towards film. I guess, it’s also significant that it is the first-ever interactive movie made at NID. The film questions whether interactivity enhances the film viewing experience. It makes you wonder whether film as a story-telling medium is interactive in essence in the first place. |
