Whirlpool is the only Indian company that has frost control refrigerators. The frost control defrosts the refrigerator automatically, saving the user from defrosting and cleaning up messy water puddles. The superior cooling so obtained maintains optimum frost level and better air circulation. My brief was to design the exterior of a single door refrigerator which offers the above mentioned technology to the consumers.

The exterior styling of this fridge necessitated making it clearly distinguishable from its competitors which include LG, Samsung, Godrej, and establishing the visual brand language (VBL) of Whirlpool of India for creating forms of refrigerators in future. I went through a research phase, where the target consumers were asked about their preferences of styling of various products. The styling trend which we obtained from the research data, showed us the direction to generate concepts. Hence, we made mock-ups of some of the concepts and put them for consumer research. The one preferred the most was taken forward for further detailing and tech evaluation. Full scale 2D drawings were made and prototypes were also made.

Since it was a live project, I had to go through all the practical problems of a product designer. This was also a very important project for me from the styling point of view, as it was not very well explored before. Referring to books related to styling, and exploring styling to add value to the product was great help to me.
