Programme Overview:
Design education in India is growing rapidly, with design institutions across the country shaping the next generation of designers. Yet many who guide this learning come to the classroom with rich professional practice but little formal grounding in how to be true facilitators in a learning environment. The M.Des. in Design Education responds to this need. It recognises that guiding design learning is a professional practice in its own right, one that calls for pedagogic expertise alongside design expertise. Offered by Interdisciplinary Design Studies (IDDS) at NID, the program is rooted in Pedagogical theory and research, Indian Knowledge Systems, and is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020.
For Design Professionals:
The programme is built for people who already know design. It welcomes experienced professionals from studios, agencies and industry who are ready to share what practice has taught them; practitioners returning to academia in search of a structured path into education; design researchers curious about how design is learned; and faculty who want formal grounding in pedagogy, assessment and curriculum building, and most importantly being passionate about ‘teaching’.
Learning Experience
Learning here is active, rational, experiential, and inquiry-based. Professionals experience the very methods they will go on to use, such as flipped classrooms, project-based learning, case discussions, hands-on workshops with integrated professional practice. A colloquium each semester builds the habit of reflecting on one’s own practice and positionality. Through the programme, professionals progress from observing learning in design institutions to simulated sessions, to guiding learning under the mentorship of experienced educators.
Programme Content
Along the way, professionals build expertise in curriculum and instructional design, assessment and learning evaluation, educational psychology, and inclusive learning. A strong research strand covers research methods, data analysis and research writing. The programme also looks ahead, engaging with digital and adaptive learning tools, data literacy and Indian Knowledge Systems in education.
Opportunities and prospects
Graduates are equipped to mentor designers, shape learning and advance design education through research. They can take up roles as design academicians, academic chairs and learning facilitators in design institutions. Other opportunities include curriculum developers, pedagogy consultants, learning experience designers, ed-tech software developers and faculty development specialists, as well as academic administrators and programme coordinators. For those drawn to inquiry, the programme is a stepping stone towards doctoral research in design education, and it also opens the way to entrepreneurial ventures in design learning.
