Shimul Mehta Vyas has been involved in design
education, research, and practice for the past 19
years. After graduating in Commerce and Law, Shimul

in July 1995 as a faculty of Accessory Design under
the aegis of the Apparel Design discipline. Since the
past 16 years, she has been actively contributing to
the cause of design education and institution building.
With an expertise in designing accessories, Shimul set
up the Lifestyle Accessory Design (LAD) discipline at
NID in 2002. She led the LAD programme for 8 years,
and is currently mentoring it to take it to the next level.
Shimul’s research interests include—Shifting Patterns of
Consumer Lifestyles, Traditional Forms of Jewellery and
Metal Surfaces, and Textures and Finishes.
Forging alliances and encouraging active interaction
of the academia with industry, institutions, and trade
bodies is something Shimul has always actively pursued.
Since a decade, she has been working closely with the
Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council to integrate
design at several levels of the Indian jewellery industry
for value addition and its strategic positioning.
Shimul helped establish the Academic Credit and
Evaluation System; designed the attire for the
convocation ceremony at NID, set up the institute’s
design shop—NIDUS; and helped in brand building
and positioning of the India International Jewellery
Show (IIJS), Signature Goa and Mumbai. She is on
the Advisory Board of the Indian Institute of Gems
and Jewellery (IIGJ) and the Rural University—a joint
endeavour by the Indian Institute of Management,
Ahmedabad and NID for the development, and
promotion of the textile and leather crafts of Jawaja,
Working with young students beaming with vibrant
energy and the freshness of ideas shared by them is
what gratifies Shimul most as an academician.
