My project is a journey that followed from the India Habitat Centre (IHC)’s brief, “We want a simple & meaningful signage which blends with the architecture and environment” to the design and development of an intuitive information architecture in the form of a sign piece based on human spatial perception and cognition. This signage was eventually to become a brand extension of IHC.
The monumental structure and vastness of space, though interesting and absorbing can intimidate visitors in the absence of an effective way finding system. The ease of movement and security of knowing where one is and where one is going is innate to the experience that any space has to offer.
I conceptualized three design concepts.
The first, titled, ‘The Human Touch’, entailed life sized pieces personifying a human in Namaste in turn guiding one to one’s destination.
The second, ‘An Alternate Philosophy’, entailed each sign piece to be crafted specially for that location and purpose
The third, ‘In Sync’, an adaptation of the forms from which IHC is built, where the architecture’s characteristics become the sign’s design details depicting different emotions. It is a geometric form with fluidity induced blended with a sense of accuracy and precision.
My project was an attempt to create a cohesive experience at IHC by fusing the beauty of the structure with an effective way finding system so as to make navigation effortless and intuitive. My endeavors encompasses the creation of a holistic and memorable experience for users when s/he comes in contact with a spatial environment. |
