I worked as an apprentice with the label Satya Paul known for its specialization in the field of designer sarees.
My project focused on two collections: Autumn-Winter 07/08 and Spring-Summer ’09.
The first (Autumn-Winter ‘07/’08) comprises of inspirations such as ‘Distress Jamevar’ wherein the basic idea is to present the ancient style ‘jamewar’ with a contemporary mix by either distressing it or breaking it, still maintaining its original essence. The second inspiration is ‘Parisian Safari’ which is again very unique as it combines attributes like fierceness of a wild animal with the soft and delicate textures of a lace. The collection consisted of a range in sarees focusing on prints, hand and machine embroideries, laces, cutwork and other surface ornamentation techniques. The color palette used consisted of warm as well as frozen colors adding basics like red, black and white.
The second (Spring-Summer ’09) had themes like Dream Flower and Polkas. A variety of screen, digital and foil prints along with machine embroideries like chikankari and mukaish, were used to build the entire range. The fabrics used ranged from georgettes, summer silks, chiffons, to shimmer. The color palette comprised of pastels, medium colors and bright colors.
Apart from these, I participated in other endeavors like creating a window display for an upcoming store as well as styling for routine fashion shows.
Through this project, I have developed an appreciation for the role that skilled karigars play in the success of an international designer brand such as Satya Paul. |
