My project was an attempt to propose a system which would help adapt the refrigerator to local needs. An overall survey, mapping food habits, storage pattern would reveal local needs, acting upon which would give a probable solution. I studied the storage pattern and food habits typical to Indian homes influenced by their cultural, ethnical and economic backgrounds, various lifestyles, trends, geographic details and brand inclinations. I did user study in North, South and West of India and identified different food habits, purchase frequency, storage pattern, types of items for storing and also the environmental location of the product in house. I also included ergonomics regarding the use of refrigerator.
Finally, I designed the interior of the 280 lt frost free refrigerator without changing the inner lining. My design was based on three parameters: in terms of space, it became a flexible refrigerator with higher degree of freedom of customisation. Second, design elements that communicate adapting to the users habit in a simpler way. Third, accessibility to the refrigerator for cleaning, operating and maintenance.
Initially, I was hesitant to do something which did not promise an interesting outcome given the constraints subject to cost and market demands. As time passed, I began to understand the workings and the kinds of challenges that came up, the amount of thought that goes into putting together a simple refrigerator: it all got interesting enough to challenge my foundations rooting me as a capable designer. |
