Casting Shadows: A Documentary

Casting Shadows: A Documentary

My diploma film was a docu-drama of twenty five minutes duration. It was screened at Jeevika, Delhi, 2007, Film South Asia, Nepal, 2007 and the Karafilm festival, Karachi 2007.

Set in the heart of the B-grade industry in Mumbai, the film takes a look at the unusual lives of two look-alikes. In a unique world in which fiction blends into reality, the film moves between these two men who have nothing in common save the alias they share, that of the greatest star in Indian cinematic history, Amitabh Bachchan.

The film is divided into three parts which I named for my convenience, ‘all about Amitabh’, ‘the war of the Amitabhs’, and ‘beneath the make up’. Each part has a dramatic piece of its own, individually titled ‘the audition’’ which is also the title sequence, ‘the war’ in the middle, and finally ‘no one even knows my name’, with which the film ends.

My roles in this project were of a writer, director, editor and for the first time, a producer. The film is a blend of fiction and documentary. For the first time, I experimented with the documentary form and tried to transcend all barriers of genre. This film for me was an exercise in independent film-making in Bombay; handling finances and working with a very tight budget went side by side with the creative aspect, thereby adding a lot to my experience as a filmmaker.
