National Institute of Design, India’s premier and first design institute has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act.
Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Hon’ble Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs placed the NID Bill in the Parliament.
The Bill states, ‘To declare the institution known as the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, to be an institution of national importance for the promotion of quality and excellence in education, research and training in all disciplines relating to Design…’, was passed unanimously by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, 09th July 2014. Earlier on Monday, July 7th the Bill was unanimously passed by Rajya Sabha.
This is the first Bill to be passed by the newly elected NDA government and was processed in a short span of three days, in both the Houses.
The NID Act came into force with effect from 16th September 2014. Subsequently the first Ordinance of the institute came into force from 08th March 2016. Rules related to appointment of the Director of NID was published in the Government Gazette on 12 November 2015. Rules related to the Accounting formats were published by Notification on 14th September 2016. Detailed Ordinance under the NID Act was published on 04th January 2017 in the Government Gazette and the Statutes of the institute were published in the Government Gazette on 17th January 2017.
