Looking Back, Within and Ahead: Celebrating Indigenous Wisdom

The Open Elective is a set of two-week long multidisciplinary workshops offered to the second year students of the Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) and the first-year students of the Master of Design (M.Des.) programmes across the three NID campuses in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. Year 2023's theme LOOKING BACK, WITHIN & AHEAD : Celebrating Indigenous wisdom is an opportunity to pause, reflect, acknowledge and revive native knowledge systems. The theme celebrates the traditional wisdom of our country by foregrounding its relevance not just today but as having the potential to support the future of a dynamic world.

The identity of this book edited by the late I.S. Mathur is established by its leitmotif—training the teachers of design or educating the design educators. This book is divided into three major sections—‘Retrospection’, ‘Introspection’, and ‘Perception’. A mélange of thoughts, experiences, and anecdotes expressed by alumni, faculty both former and present, and artists—this book touches upon poignant issues which can influence the spread of design education across design schools/institutions in India.
