Amit has evolved from a conceptual stage to a contextual domain of design that involves design within the paradigms of holistic design approaches. Hence, the projects he guides have a socio-cultural focus that involves systems thinking, design for common, and ethical approaches.
In 2009, he joined NID after a long stint with multi-faceted professional exposure to the design industry and has transformed from a practitioner to an educator and researcher. Amit is an alumnus of NID’s 1996 postgraduate batch, he holds a Master’s in Anthropology, a B. A. (Hon) in Sociology (Hon.) and has an ongoing PhD with NID.
Being interested in research methods unique to design, he has diversified it to a systematic approach to intuitive concept designs, colour-human interaction, anthropology of design, cultural ergonomics and body data mapping, system design, and functional clothing with a cross-disciplinary approach. On the skill front, he has been teaching fundamentals on colour, form, design drawing, and materials and guides key design projects.
Amit was instrumental in the operational and infrastructural set-up of the Apparel Design discipline at the NID Gandhinagar campus between 2009 and 2018. He completed several professional projects at NID which include developing design curriculums, designing functional clothing/uniforms, and conducting professional training workshops, and has been active with new research-innovation centers. He has successfully collaborated with several industries on classroom projects and has mentored students for their achievement in reputed design challenges.
