My project aimed at bringing out the best in the bamboo craft. The aspiration was to bridge the gap between old and new; rural and urban, traditional and contemporary. The overall goal of the Tripura Bamboo mission project is uplifting the livelihood of artisans of Tripura in the bamboo sector.
I targeted an urban market with traditional aesthetic values. Keeping in mind the skepticism of the Indian customer towards bamboo furniture, I designed stools and accessories that can be bought off-the shelf and not too highly priced. These are aimed at being inserts in existing setups. The experimental customer will find it worth to make small buys. This will help create confidence about the material in the buyers’ mind.
This project was my first interaction ever with bamboo as a designer. It has helped me develop a better understanding of the material and projects at a systems level. The final products developed were generated from a single concept and hold promises for many more applications and product diversification.
While my project has reached a conclusion, I like to think of it as a beginning to my association with bamboo. I strongly believe that the use of bamboo in combination with other materials like jute, rubber wood, cotton nivar will add both value and visual interest in the product. Some of my concepts include design opportunities that the sector holds for the future with technological interventions.
I am humbled by the knowledge of the locals of Tripura and am glad to have contributed in a small way to their skill development. |
