Interaction Design for a Smartphone

Interaction Design for a Smartphone

The project, as a design challenge, was more than an emulation or extension of the existing mobile phone design practices. At an abstracted level, it was a professional and personal endeavour to add value, by redefining the whole system and the existing practices of design in the domain of hand-held mobile computing.

Being a ‘start from scratch’ exercise, there was an attempt at a complete overhaul of the system to come up with a solution that gives a unique identity to the product. This implied looking beyond the existing paradigms of information and interaction design and evolving new methodologies. However, it was essential to understand the premises of interaction amongst existing handhelds (touchscreen and non-touch screen), to be able to map the scope for redefining.

The research objective was to keep abreast with current developments in the related field; almost all the research was drawn from published papers from universities/ organizations. Internet was the major source for this study. Primary focus was laid on coming up with ideas and explorations and coming up with a structure on which the product could be built in the occupied priority. Most effort went into innovation and detailing and solving specific problems like screen space, optimisation of features, etc.
It was a novel approach towards conjuring up a new streamlined intuitive interaction of a being with a handheld, while drawing from the most current in technology, user experience and research methodologies.
