Signage System for National Gallery of Modern Art

Signage System
for National Gallery of Modern Art

For the project, I had to evolve a complete signage system and a navigational way finding map for the complete environment at the National Gallery for Modern Art.

Since the Gallery does not have a permanent design identity, the gallery council was looking for signage which could also be a design identity for the main gallery and be continued in all the branches of the gallery across the country.

The project involved much thinking and exploration in the field of Indian and international signage. Indian signage, I feel, still has a long way to go in comparison with European, American and other Asian countries. Signage in India does not follow a definite pattern, and it depends on the installer how he perceives the information.

He executes the information in his own way based on his own mindset. So, the challenge lay in coming up with signage language that would be understood by locals and also by an international community.

The development language for the signage involved work on form, colour, concept usage, comprehension and understanding patterns. The project was interesting in terms of understanding how people comprehend pictograms.
