The Project, the Medium and the Discipline

Of Dates and Updates: The Reinterpretation of India in a Diary

My diploma project centred around creating the website for and interpreting the brand Ishanya, a speciality mall for interiors and exteriors in Pune.

As a graphic designer, my role consisted of a wide range of tasks from idea generation, discussions, and conceptualisation to content organisation and site structure, communication with and presentations to the client, and visualisation and execution of web design and motion graphics for the website. In addition to this, I was involved in creating concepts and wire frames for the mall’s touchscreen kiosks. These kiosks aim to help end users with on-site navigation. Another important part of the project was a critical evaluation of the end product and a relevant discussion of issues related to the project.

The title of my document ‘The Project, the Medium and the Discipline’ describes my view and method of documentation. In order to give a holistic and complete view of the project, I looked at various aspects of the medium (the web) and the discipline (graphic design); connecting each to the other. I covered a wide range of topics from the changing face of graphic design today, understanding web usage in India, a timeline of the development of the web with design, to a brief look at NID’s philosophies and politics.
