Signs are an important medium through which graphic designers express themselves. Visual guidance systems affect more people in a practical way than any other form of graphic design. They are one of the most conspicuous and dominant elements in urban and rural landscapes. Thus, it is necessary to have a uniform, effective and purely informational signage system throughout the city.
The project was envisioned to redevelop streets and street appurtenances of Ahmedabad city that included street signage system to make a better system efficiently catering to the needs of citizens. It would also make people aware of important things to be considered while on the road. My role was to compile a reference book for standard street signage with enough details that could be used as a handbook for implementation of the signs.
The process included information collection, analysis, and identifying the problem area: photographing the present signage, surveys, analysing information, case studies, formulating the information/ categorisation. It also entailed exploring design solutions: sizes, colour, fonts, height of implementation, pictograms; developing prototypes for testing; corrections and end deliverables and final implementation.
My learning in one sentence would be what Peter Kneebone said: “A sign that works badly is worse than no sign.” The project gave me an insight to what it takes to come up with good, effective, easy to remember, and uniform signs. |
