The project made me understand the role of a graphic designer. Moving out from classroom projects, it’s a different ball game in the outside world. My diploma project was about branding of a T shirt company.
Branding is done by companies to get more business. Each and every branding decision is considered carefully and then applied to a real life scenario. Each step requires understanding the brand, the product and the user. Every decision made affects the next, and finally the whole brand; so, one must develop an idea till the time one is satisfied.
My target audience was the youth and I wanted to provide them with a medium, which expressed their views and opinions. From the production aspect to design details, I had to understand their need.
The learning was priceless. Once I understood the basics, I played with the rules of branding to come up with innovative ways to set high standards. Balancing the role of an MBA and a graphic designer is interesting; you move out of the latter role and step into the shoes of a marketing person and think about profits and costing. For me, it was like creating my own unique language, starting with alphabets and then going into concepts and ideas for people I had not met, but who would see my work. I realised that with every project, we learn some thing new everyday and we unlearn… finally we come out as a better person, a better designer! |
