I designed a range of Menswear for Lakme Fashion Week, Spring- Summer 2007. The process involved studying the infrastructure, market scope and possibilities, studying the concept, developing design approaches, finalising one approach direction, initial conceptualisation, colour story, studying the trends, implementation of the design solution, develop the final concept to full details and fine tuning, final artworks and design specifications, and showcasing the collection at Lakme Fashion Week.
The project was a significant one because the Lakme Fashion Week is truly a hub for fashion exchange and an excellent stage for designers to showcase their talents before an international audience. What is remarkable about the LFW is that there is something for everyone to gain- from buyers to the designers, the emerging and gen next designers to the models.
Our theme, ‘Isms’ was an extract of the major art movements and their translation into an apparel form which is also a tribute to the great artists. We started with the Renaissance and gradually moved across Baroque, Neo Classicism, Post Impressionism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop Art. They are all different art movements that have an expression and a mood to depict.
The project gave me an overview of the real market, and an understanding of the systems approach to any project. Planning is another important thing I got to learn in. The project was an amalgamation of different approaches, skills and their applications, and acted as a revision of all the exercises together. |
