The project was developing a collection of twenty-five ensembles made up of textured fabrics, stylised construction and intricate detailing for the Spring Summer 2007 for Lakme India Fashion Week 2006 for the launch of the label ‘Sutra’. The collection was to be based on application and placement of different kinds of surfaces and tie-die techniques to the innovative cuts and silhouettes. The collection of garments was aimed at capturing the market and clients at high end of the couture market segment.
The design process started with developing design and working on production for some regular clients like Ogaan, Fine Things, Fabindia, to get clarity of the kind of work the companies do and their approach towards LIFW ’06. It included concept development, deciding the mood for the collection, preparing the mood board, defining the colour palette, fabric selection, sourcing of the fabrics, fabric dyeing, design illustrations, pattern making, fabric treatments (shibori, tie and dye, fringes, texturing, felting), garment construction, photo shoot, showcasing the collection in LIFW ’06, and follow ups for further production requirements based on the orders.
Through the project I got an opportunity to work with a fashion designer. It was a hands-on experience of design implementation. My learning started from scratch and extended to the actual collection of garments, which were portrayed on the ramp of such a major fashion event. |
