I designed three collections for women, 25 years and older: Winter Collection 2006, Black Collection 2006, and Winter Knit Collection 2006. Keeping in mind the existing collections, I had to create something new on the same lines. For the winter collections, colours were specified, and I had to work on the surface ornamentation. The Black Collection had fabrics which were black in colour and again the surface ornamentation was to be worked on. The main theme for the knit was to use new silhouettes and use contrast colours for detailing.
The process involved first looking at the collection which already existed, taking an inspiration: use of floral motifs and spirals, developing new motifs using the inspiration, and making swatches and samples of the designs using different forms of ornamentation in different colour combinations. The main technique that was used was machine embroidery. The next step was placing the motifs on the garment, finalising and then putting it into production. For the knit collection, new samples were made. There was a lot of use of contrast colours for the detailing of necklines and sleeves.
My learning from the project was huge: creating something novel keeping in mind the constraints that were there; working with different kinds of ornamentation techniques; learning the process of manufacture of knits as this was the first time I was working with knits; and above all, how different the process is in the industry compared to what we learn in the institute. |
