Elements of Nostalgia….

Elements of Nostalgia….

The diploma project is a valuable means of learning about the organisation, the different stages involved in the manufacturing of a line, right from visualisation to procuring raw materials, to making the actual product.

The objective of my diploma project was to use the inherent skills and strengths at Haveli to come up with a collection that was aiming at learning and exploring various possibilities in printing, embroidery techniques and construction of garments. The subject chosen was mid 20th century clothing. This would mean the actual realisation of a contemporary range projecting the mood of the period, brought out by various means and methods employed in the fabrication. A colour palette was chosen that could cover a wide range, right from dull browns, shades of gold, antique red to the bright and lively turquoise and raspberry to shades of earth browns, khakhi, teel and deep violet. The collection aimed at Spring Summer 2006-2007 and was redefined to extend up to Autumn Winter 2006-2007.

After studying different textiles in history, I noticed our continuous borrowing from the past. Especially, in India, be it fabrics, surface ornamentation, styles, silhouettes or other compositions of various types, we have always looked up to our rich history as a source of inspiration. This originality that lies deep beneath, needs to be drawn out in numerous ways. Period clothing has always held its sway and a tryst with elements of history will always be a thrill.
