I did my project with Gizella Aurza, a textile designer from Brazil who was appointed by Arvind mills. I was fortunate that I had the opportunity to work in the knit department of Arvind Mills. I designed a collection of lingerie, lounge wear, and sleep wear for the Spring Summer Collection 2007, catering to companies like Marks and Spencer, H&M, and Victoria Secrets.
The idea behind this project was to promote the sale of fabric in the European markets, but not for mass production. The collection had to be built around 3 themes: White, Delicate and Sensual. It was further divided into 3 parts: lounge wear, sleep wear, lingerie. This exposure allowed me to gain confidence and use all that I had learnt in terms of practical application, client briefs, cost consideration, market trends, and buyers’ psychology.
Interacting and working in industry provided a platform where I could test myself, and utilise the knowledge acquired at NID. This project lent a chance to experience the fast paced industry and build a foundation for myself in the corporate world. Our lectures at NID gave me guidance in different subjects that helped build a solid base, while Industry gave me a platform to have practical knowledge and management of design and the way industry functions. I also learned how the different sections and departments of a company work in co-ordination with each other to achieve desired results. |
