Comprehensive Infant Care Unit

Comprehensive Infant Care Unit

My project focused on redesign of Comprehensive Infant Care Unit (CICU) for Phoenix Medical Systems (Chennai), a pioneer in the neonatal care products market in India.
The existing design of CICU had numerous issues such as inefficient rotating, tilting and sliding mechanisms; insufficient and unplanned storage space; un-ergonomic rotating and tilting handles; unusable software interface of the LCD display with poor information architecture and confusing visual layout; poor form and mismanagement of tubes and wires.

As a product designer, I had to suggest efficient rotating, tilting and sliding mechanisms for the unit. A well organised storage space was designed for efficient storage and identification of the instruments. Also, the handles for the rotating and tilting mechanisms had to be redesigned to suit the hands of the Indian nurse. The software interface of the LCD display had to be re-conceptualised completely with a better visual layout and information architecture. The over all form of the concept derived inspiration from a germinating seed.

Often, CICU in private hospitals in India are imported from abroad. These products being designed for the western world have many issues when used in Indian context like hot and humid climate, poor technical knowledge among the nurses, anthropometric problems and risk of sepsis due to poor maintenance. It was a good experience for me as a designer to make these products compatible with the Indian context and efficient enough to be used by Indian nurses.
